Christian Ethics, Churchly Ethics

Dr. Sam Wells is Dean of Duke Chapel at Duke University and Research Professor of Christian Ethics at Duke Divinity School.  He is the author of several books on Christian ethics and on the task of preaching.  Before coming to Duke University in 2005, Dean Wells served four parishes in the United Kingdom as a priest in the Anglican Church.

Dean Wells lecture will explore the nature of ecclesial ethics, which in contrast to universal ethics or subversive ethics attempts to be ethics distinctively for the church community.  He will also meet with members of the campus ministry association during his visit.

Mystery, Mess, and Glory:  Recasting the Artist's Vocation

Cam Anderson recently assumed the position of executive director of CIVA (Christians in the Visual Arts) in February 2009.  Prior to joining CIVA, Cam served on the staff of Intervarsity Christian Fellows/USA for 30 years, most recently as the National Director of the organization's Graduate and Faculty Ministry.  Cam completed his MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI.  He is an artist and a writer and is married to Cynthia (C.K.) Anderson.  They have two adult children, Jesse and Emilie, and live in Madison, WI.

The Sound of Freedom:  How Music Makes Us Re-think What It Means to Be Free.

Jeremy Begbie is the Thomas Langford Professor of Music at Duke Divinity School.  Previously the Associate Principal of Ridley Hall and lecturer in theology at Cambridge University in the U.K., Dr. Begbie is known for his exploration of the relationship between theology and the arts.  Among his numerous books are Voicing Creation's Praise: Toward a Theology of the Arts, Beholding the Glory:  Incarnation Through the Arts; Theology, Music, and Time; Sounds the Depths:  Theology Through the Arts; and Resounding Truth:  Christian Wisdom in the World of Music.

Dr. Begbie's lecture is the Veritas Forum for 2010 at the University of Michigan.

Race, Religion, and Politics

Dr. Mark Noll is the Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History at Notre Dame.  In 2005 he was named one of the 25 most influential evangelicals in America.

His books in The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind; Turning Points:  Decisive Moments in the History of Christianity; Protestants in America; America's God:  From Jonathan Edwards to Abraham Lincoln; and The Civil War as a Theological Crisis (among others).
